A tall redhaired german moving to Madison, Wisconsin? Now that could develop into an interesting story, ay?! Any resemblance of the blog title to movie titles is fully intentional :)

Wazzup!?

Ok, now that I am here in the US for roughly a month, it might be time to give a summary about the starnge observations that I made so far:

- Squirrels perform tightrope walks on phone cables (preferably in the morning in front of our living room window).

- When you look at people more than 21 sec while passing them on the street, they assume you know them somehow and say 'hello'.

- Bread, although consiting of air mostly here, is incredibly expensive!

- When you order a coffee, you will be handed some brown water that tastes faintly burned! I need to buy a cafetera/espresso maker!

- Liquid bread (aka beer) is also incredibly expensive but not as bad as its reputation suggests (that is IF you buy the right brand).

- People studying or working at UW get free bus passes ... wicked!

- Although with cable you have the choice of 75 TV channels, there's only crap on the telly (apart from sports and the news).

- There are cars on the streets that are held together only by rust, duct tape and the faith of their owners.

- You are allowed to ride a vehicle and talk on the mobile. Also you don't have to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle (otherwise you couldn't talk on the phone, no? Believe me ... I have seen it!).

Seems like the comments that people send don't go thru although I just checked the settings and it is set to 'anyone'
Here's what Chris thought about my observations ...

Squirrels perform tightrope walks on phone cables (preferably in the morning in front of our living room window).

yup, bold little fuckers, too. their next trick will be to steal your nasty wonder bread from out of your kitchen while you watch in horror and dismay.

- When you look at people more than 21 sec while passing them on the street, they assume you know them somehow and say 'hello'.

actually i've noticed no one in boston says hello even tho they do know you, 21 seconds of stare or not. consider yourself lucky to be in a friendly place.

- Bread, although consiting of air mostly here, is incredibly expensive!

tsk, tsk, tsk. how many times do I have to tell you euro types. b-a-k-e-r-y. it's where you buy fresh bread. supermarkets sell shitty wonder bread for toast and pb&j sandwiches which stick to the roof of your mouth. some progressive supermarkets have b-a-k-e-r-y inside. shh. don't tell the europeans. i suggest:
Whole Foods Market
(608) 233-9566
3313 University Ave
Madison, WI 53705

probably have some good ol ripe cheese for ya, too! (but of course pasteurized, ugh)

- When you order a coffee, you will be handed some brown water that tastes faintly burned! I need to buy a cafetera/espresso maker!

hmm, ok, got me there, but we are improving. restaurants are a bit behind though, so stick with coffe shops.

- Liquid bread (aka beer) is also incredibly expensive but not as bad as its reputation suggests (that is IF you buy the right brand).

Jawohl! stick to micro brews and you'll be ok. when you visit, we'll take you to our local pub for a koelsch, 0,5 Flasche aus koeln. 7.25 dollars !

- People studying or working at UW get free bus passes ... wicked!

hmm. hold your enthusiasm till you see the two decrepit busses which go from downtown Madison to...nowhere really.

- Although with cable you have the choice of 75 TV channels, there's only crap on the telly (apart from sports and the news).

tell me about it. we no longer have cable so it's 5 channels, only crap apart from sports and... umm... boston news sucks.

- There are cars on the streets that are held together only by rust, duct tape and the faith of their owners.

we like to squeeze every last freakin penny of worth from the shit detroit sold us. i too have faith, and drive a '95.

- You are allowed to ride a vehicle and talk on the mobile. Also you don't have to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle (otherwise you couldn't talk on the phone, no? Believe me ... I have seen it!).

natural selection at work. regulate that kind of behavior and you'll just bring down the average intelligence of the race. but probably lower insurance rates, too. hmm. ok, we'll take that one under consideration.

Uhm, about the bus lines here ... it's not so bad, there's quite a few only they don't run very frequently on the weekend. Still it's way better to use them for free than paying for them ;)

Daniel, a good coffee place that the connoisseurs frequent is Electric Earth on the corner of Randall and Regent. Much better than Union South, and they have some unbelievable chocolate ice cream there as well. Just something to tide you over til your machine ships...
